A seminar titled “Sports as a Profession: Prospects and Challenges in Bangladesh” and an award-giving ceremony for Daffodil International University (DIU) students who have achieved national and international success in sports were held today at the university’s International Convention Center in Birulia, Savar, Dhaka.
The event was organized by the Department of Physical Education and Sports Science of Daffodil International University.
The Vice-Chancellor of Daffodil International University, Professor Dr. M. R. Kabir, attended the event as the Chief Guest. Special Guests included Amena Begum, Additional Secretary of the Ministry of Youth and Sports; Brigadier General Mohammad Saif Ullah, Director General of the Bangladesh Krira Shikkha Pratishthan (BKSP); and Professor Dr. Mohammad Masum Iqbal, Pro-Vice-Chancellor of Daffodil International University.
The seminar was chaired by Professor Dr. S. M. Mahabub Ul Haque Majumder, Dean of the Faculty of Health and Life Sciences. Professor Dr. Mohammad Sohel of the Department of Physical Education and Sports Science, Daffodil International University, presented the keynote paper.
Among others, speeches were delivered by Sharmin Akter Shanta, Head of the Department of Physical Education and Sports Science, and Assistant Professor Abdus Salam.
More than fifty DIU students were honored at the event for their significant contributions and achievements at national and international levels in football, cricket, hockey, volleyball, swimming, gymnastics, boxing, athletics, and martial arts.
The speakers emphasized that the government has launched nationwide initiatives, including Notun Kuri Sports 2026 and the Prime Minister’s Gold Cup National Football Competition 2026, to help develop the next generation into healthy, confident, skilled athletes and patriotic citizens. They noted that such initiatives aim to support the physical, mental, and moral development of young people while identifying emerging sporting talent and creating opportunities for them to develop their abilities at the national level.
The speakers also stressed the importance of making sports a compulsory part of the curriculum from Class Four onward. They recommended establishing a structured salary scale for athletes competing at the national level and called upon the government to establish more specialized sports education and training institutions to improve the overall standard of sports in Bangladesh.
